The end is near

Friday, November 30th, 2007

The final creature has been made for Generation 100 and the countdown has begun for the Gamma Ray destruction. Preparations are being made to update the wiki over the weekend to mark the dying species as extinct. While its sad in some ways to see old favorites die, there is excitement brewing over the new creatures that will rise out of the Gamma Ray ashes.

The forum is running a diorama contest of “Snapshots of Old Sagan“. Entries are still being accepted. I’m going to post each entry on the front page as all of them are deserving of recognition. I’ll start with the first entry today and will the others over the next week. The winner will be announced here also.

This would be the second time I have featured one of Rhodix‘s drawings but this creature drawing is just incredible. The coloring is beautiful, with the antenna reminding me of Christmas lights. Rhodix has recently become a moderator and creature approver on the Sagan 4 forum.

fraboohorn2

The Fraboohorn split off from the Spikedshell Bubblehorns of Huggs Beach. In the same way of the Acicubins, they found protection and food abundance in interior lands, spreading through the forest and the borders of the volcanic cone. Larger that its ancestors, it lost all its spikes and became slower, but in compensation it developed a new method of protection, even more secure.

They never were

A couple of ‘shrew’ species that never came to be. Created by Ichthyostega.

nauton
Nautonotosaurus (Nautonotosaurus sp.)
Reason: A more advanced species of ‘shrew’ (the Were Shrew) evolved, and because of issues from competition.

wright
Wrightean Shrew (Sorimonstrum wrightensis)
Reason: Wright was not connected to the north pole.

Disaster ahead

Generation 100 is almost complete. At the end of that generation there will be a Gamma Ray Burst from a SuperNova!!

gamma ray

This will mean that many creatures will go extinct. Creatures in caves and underground should survive but check back to see who lives and who dies.

The new life that comes out of the ashes should be more unique and alien than ever. This would be a good time for anyone wanting to join Sagan 4 to do so and be part of the team creating the new ecosystem.

It’s big and it stabs it’s prey. The picture of this creature killings its prey is really cool. The Flying Stabber was created by Huckbuck.

stabber

When the Twelve-Winged Worm of Yokto Island grew and grew the Flying Dart grew along with it. The Twelve-Winged Worm and the Sandwalkerworm were still easy prey to the Flying Dart that continued to grow along with the Sandwalkerworm. But the Flying Dart were not able to grow as big as the Striderworm, since they did not have enough food to provide such a big body. Therefore the Striderworm turned to big to be a prey, making the Flying Stabber look for a new prey. The Combstrainer turned out to be the perfect prey, and the Flying Stabber became a specialist at hunting the poor Plent. Since the Combstrainer is a good flyer, and has some speed on the ground as well, the Flying Stabber evolved strong exoskeleton arms on the wings to be able to fly faster. They also stripped down the exoskeleton covering the body to be lighter, the only exoskeleton left is that witch keeps the worm together. To be able to attack the fast Combstrainer the Flying Stabber also evolved its stabbing weapon. This “weapon” is able to stab the spike into the prey with tremendous speed again and again.

Today’s pick is by Martyk. This is an interesting worm, it reproduces by taking off it’s back legs. The legs grow into new worms. How cool is that?

worm

Having been pushed to extinction in both the cave and alpine regions, the Ferrumworm needed to move to find new, more plentiful food sources. Thus the Snyron evolved, replacing its ancestor. Overtime, its legs developed in a way to allow for faster and easier movement to and from food sources as amounts of iron in the sediment fluctuated. At the same time, it’s body lengthened to accommodate it’s new mode of transportation. As a substitute for iron in areas lacking, they turned to extracting carbon and other minerals from carcasses much the same way they do with iron in the ground. Spending more time on the surface, their armor developed to be stronger and cover more area, while other non-ferrous metals ingested desaturated the rust red color of it. Living in small burrows, they breed by splitting off their back pair of legs and their tail, which will eventually regrow. This severed section will soon grow it’s own nostrils for locating iron and grow in length as well as gain length before becoming a full sized Snyron ready to reproduce.

Fan Art

It’s always nice to see a new piece of fan art featuring the Sagan 4 creatures. This one was drawn by Neoskel.

yannick ice cave

This picture is set in the South Tundra, at one of the Yannick Ice Cave entrances. The creatures are a Plentwarg Diredog and a small Nobit hiding behind some snow covered rocks.

The green you see on the Plentwarg is from bruises and cuts caused by a rock slide a few days ago. It was not seriously injured and the rest of its pack also got away with similar cuts and bruises. It has almost found the Nobit, but has been distracted by a call from one of its pack members, they have taken down a Black-Winged Nobom nearby. This Plentwarg is making an answering call and will join the rest of its pack to feed. It looks like this Nobit will live to hide another day.

Very colorful and it only eats flying worms. One of the many unique creatures by Hydromancerx, the founder of Sagan 4. It’s hard to choose which of Hydro’s creatures would be the best to feature but this one caught my eye with the bright colors and the flys. The Sauceback line has been a very popular unique creature.

frilled sauceback

The Frilled Sauceback split from its ancestor the Feathered Sauceback. It is even smaller than its ancestor and has changed its lifestyle to eat only Flyworms. They have developed a feathery neck fill in which it catches flyworms in. They still travel in packs and will herd clouds of flyworms into small concentrated masses, then one will run into the cloud and catch as many flyworms as it can in its neck frill and lick it up with its long sticky green tongue. They will do this again and again until all of the pack has eaten.

They use their keen hearing and strong sense of smell to help make social bonds. It now can make a variety of sounds from its largest lung, which range from high shrills to low raspberry-like sounds. Frilled Saucebacks are very social and form a hierarchical pack, similar to Earth’s wolves. In each of the biomes, there is a sub-species, that has distinct markings to help in blend into its environment. Shown here is a Savanna subspecies. Like its ancestor its skin has developed feathery extensions that it uses to help maintain a more constant body temperature. Its mandible-tusks have grown smaller to get out of the way of the long tongue.

Week 15 period

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

Sagan 4 has entered a new timeline week. The amount of species per generation has increased from 20-24. There are no changes to the map this time. The weeks are named after Sagan 4 team members. The name of the week 15 period is the “Martykian Period”.
