Creature Feature

Monday, October 29th, 2007

I picked this creature because of the unique pattern and coloring it displays. It was created by Oviraptor, one of our original Sagan 4 members. He also creates our maps and helps to keep the website running. He originally created the Miragebok line as well as the popular Plent line.

Miragebok

The Horned Miragebok has replaced its ancestor in Huggs-Yokto Savanna. It has gotten slightly larger, and more robust. Living in large herds, their skin color-changing ability has lessened some, in favor of brute strength to choose mates. This is where the horn come into play. Mating rivals fight each other with their horns, though these battles rarely result in injury. Interestingly, both genders sport horns and will fight against the same gender for potential mates. What determines which gender does the fighting is the ratio of one gender to the other; the more popular gender bring the one that fights. Their vestigial limbs have now disappeared completely from view, as well as their front knee-claw. Their foot claw has also drastically reduced in size.

The North Polar Ghark created by Yannick.

This one caught my eye as unusual because of the wide mouth, the tattered fin which gave it a cool look.

Ghark

The Ghastly Snarks slowly migrated to the North Polar Coast. Here, they found an abundance of food. Thanks to this, they’ve grown larger. Their tail flaps have grown significantly larger, allowing going faster at the same energy cost, due to the high amount of water being displaced.

Their dorsal fin has atrophied more, making them weaker, and thus more sustainable for rips. Due to this, and the hanging dorsal fin, they can get rips in their dorsal fin when the fin get stuck behind some rocks.

Creature Feature

Once a week, probably on Mondays, I’m going to pick a creature to be featured on the front page. These are organisms that I find interesting and creative. They might be animals or plants but they will be in the current week of Sagan which is week 14 right now.

Today’s pick is the Smaraslim Bubblehorn created by Rhodix.

It’s creepy and crawly and produces tons of mucus. I found this one interesting due to the cave environment and the mucus factor. A unique creature that I wouldn’t want to meet in real life but I liked reading about it.

SB500

Spread through the rainforest, some Acicubins found shelter and protection into the caves, where they changed their way to disguise into environment and developed a new species.

Besides feeding from waste, the Smaraslim Bubblehorn also searches food in the walls of the caves, where it finds minerals and microorganisms. It developed the capacity to scale rocky surfaces, remaining most part of the time adhered to the ceiling of the cave. Its shell is lighter and resembles the rocks, disguising its presence in the environment. Scaling the walls also prevents it of be eaten by predators. Its mouth secretes a kind of mucus, which is collected by its sensorial organs and forms long and sticky wires, responsible by the adhesion of particle suspended on air. After some time, the Smaraslim collects the wires and feeds from the particles contained on them.

For security reason, the Smaraslims go down to the cave floor for the copulation. When laying its eggs, the female secrets a great amount of mucus over the shell of the male, depositing its eggs on it. The mucus guarantees that the eggs remain hydrated during their development. The male stays in the cave floor while it waits the mucus stiff and adhere to its shell, guaranteeing that the eggs will remain there. After some time, the Smaraslims scale again. When born, the offspring leave the protection of the shell and initiate their life.
