I don't think we have the man power to move everything over manually. We need to find a way to upload all the data from the wiki at once

For wiki hosting, I personally like Wikispaces.com; it's free and has an easy to use page editor.

If you can find out some way to save and move the whole database however, you'd need a wiki with a similar system as the old one. If someone has an admin account on the Sagan 4 wiki, try looking for 'export' and 'import' functions; if those exist, it might help a lot.

Just Checked it out, looks reasonable but the overall layout itself, down to the core looks a bit like a 'wikia' site style, not so much for posting large amounts f information and links but more for page search and basically an aesthetic look. -Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

Would it be possible to be able to simply "freeze" the old wiki once we hit the next week and then start a new one?

Feasable yes, but of course there are still species which will be extant for many generations, it would be quite an annoyance to jump back and forth to find a species you want to evolve and more of a hassle to link the evolution's on the new wiki back to the old one.

Yes as AnguaNatalie was talking about, if there are import and export functions it would probably be good to see if that can move large chucnks of data of page by page. Rewriting everything from as far back as Protosagania would be a last resort

That also wouldn't solve the problem of the wiki hosting. Someone still has to pay for it.

About Wikispaces, it's easy to link between pages there. It also uses a tag system that I'm rather fond of. It's very similar to the category system of normal wiki's, only it doesn't automatically generate list pages; instead you can include a list of pages with a particular tag in any page. You can even combine them, making for example a list of all pages with the tags 'macro', 'fauna', 'extant' and 'location X'. I used this a lot in my Planetary Explorers wiki (which unfortunately died due to lack of a decent game system and time to make one).

Let me just add a few comments here. I am NOT shutting down the site or the wiki. I'm NOT asking Hydro to stop the project right now or by the anniversary date.

What I am asking for is an exit date for me to stop hosting and being responsible for the maintenance of the site. It's not the cost as much as having to fix the errors, spam and the times it gets hacked. Saying you want to help is one thing but realize that it's a commitment to Hydro and the project if you do. I'm just tired and I don't want this responsibility anymore. I'm not a computer expert or a hosting expert. Everything I learned I taught myself by doing it and reading online. Every time there is an error or problem it takes hours of research to see what happened and how to fix it.

The wiki information is stored in a database. A new wiki can be set up using the old files and the database. You don't have to redo all the files.  The forum and blog also uses a database. Any of these can be moved to a new host or taken over by someone. The problem is that for now, Hydro doesn't know how to do this and it doesn't seem like anyone else has the knowledge to do this except me.

I hosted this forum on GoDaddy once and it got too slow. I had to change hosting services so the forum is okay but the wiki wouldn't work so I'm really using two different hosting sites.

The error with the wiki now seems to be it's using too much memory. I'm not sure if that is server side or something I can change.

The site is paid for until May of next year so for now, you can carry on as normal. Just be aware that we need to find a solution and work toward releasing me from this.... please.  Cry

Ok so this is what I want to do ...

1. Backup all of Sagan 4 wiki to my external hard drive as if it were moving to a new wiki. This is for me emotionally to know that its safe with me off the web.

2. I will take over the payment and maintenance that LadyM has done. I am guess by May since that its how long the contract lasts. So I would like her to teach me what to do and how to do it.

This means for you guys business as usual, no new forum, no new wiki, no moving stuff. I think this is the best solution because either way I would have to defend against bots and spam. And since LadyM already put in all the bot and spam protection we should be a lot better off than moving to a new forum and wiki.

Thanks for your all your guy's support. You guys really do care for this project. I am very touched. So thank you.

So you'll let us stay until next May? Seriously LadyM I appreciate all you have done. I am pretty sure If I was in your posistion I would of called it quits out of frustration years ago. Your clearly a great person man... I am sure we will have it worked out before then Smiley. I promise I will do what I can to help...
