We are having another diorama contest in celebration of Sagan 4's 3rd anniversary. You may pick any biome from any time in Sagan 4's history. Preferably a biome that has not been done before. All submissions must be posted on Sagan 4's anniversary,  in this thread by Midnight Pacific Standard Time September 2nd, 2009. Voting will occur the week after.



The winner of the contest will get to design a silicon based lifeform! Grin Note its must be a microbe and it must be "crystalline" in nature. Silicon based lifeforms grow much slower than carbon based ones and grow like crystals. So once made it will only be evolveable once a week (rather than once a gen). The silicon microbe will appear in a brand new underground cavern called "Roddenberry Cavern" named after Gene Roddenberry. The winner will get to choose location of this cavern.

Maybe we should debate silicon life first. Silicon dioxide is a solid, so a silcon-based cell couldn't respirate. Also, theres no complex silcon forms in comets, so how could life arrive on sagan4.
Oh, and why does silicon life evolve more slowly?

3. From our last debate I was under the impression silicon based life grows as slowly as crystals so their growth would be much slower and in turn cause evolution to run at a much slower rate. I am pretty sure this is accurate.

i don't see why it needs to be crystal like though, not like it'd be anymore silicon than we are carbon...

there fore having this develop on one of the farther out planets would be preferred? interesting that this would be the real Sagan life (native) as compared to the nonnative Sagan life that we're currently working with -since this one would have developed on the planet and the ones we're working with came from space-

Are yous sure? The stuff i read said it had to be at high temperatures and high pressure due to Silicon dioxide being a solid and needing heat to become a liquid.

Who ever said that silicon animal would breath like us? for all we know, if there are silicon based creatures, they probably could secrete SiO2 out for their skin like sweat. Why would it need to be a gas?
