Ok I tried to make this not look like a "Furry" or "Anthro" but its really hard to make a sentient raccoon not look like it.
After most of the Earth was urbanized it left little place for wilderness. Thus most of earths wild species became extinct except for in zoos. However a few survivors such rats, roaches and pigeons were able to co-exist with the humans despite their urbanization of the planet. Eventually the Earth could no longer sustain the humans and they went off their the star ship to colonize new worlds while their polluted planet was left to rot.
The Earth no matter how polluted and urbanized was quick to reclaim her planet and most of mankind's presence on Earth rusted and turned back to dust. Most of their domesticated species eventually died out as well. However the species co-exist with the humans were the ones who were able to survive after they left as well. One such creature was the humble raccoon. It amazing adaptability and opportunistic nature allowed it to thrive in a world without humans.
As they evolved they used their hands more carrying objects and using them to get to food or even kill food. Since they were nocturnal animals to begin with they resumed their lives of night activity. Groups of post-raccoon learned to hunt in packs and work together in groups. With each kill and more meat in their diets their brains grew. However their omnivore diet allowed them to survive in times when meat was scarce. They were not above scavenging meat from other carnivores or even stealing the eggs of bird and reptiles.
Now more social they developed communal grooming which increased social bonding. They lived in North America and despite global warming kept their fur for insulation as well as grooming reasons. Using their hands more and more those that could stand up for longer periods of time were more successful and the tends of walking upright became the norm. They used their fluffy tail as a counterbalance when walking.
Over time their brains grew and grew until they were able to make simple tools. Thus giving rise to Procyon habilis
or "Tool Coon". While not as smart as humans this 3 foot tall raccoon was smarter than a chimp. They even evolved a thumb for manipulating flint for toolmaking. Their new dexterity lead to tools for spears, cutting open animal hides and flint napping.
Their dwelling were primitive and were more or less just a wooden lean-to. None the less this gave them shelter in the rain and snow which allowed them to keep their fur dry. Despite these advantages they still did not learn how to make fire nor did they have formal language. All they could do is communicate through primitive squeaks and barks. They really did not need to cook food yet since they still had the stomaches and teeth of their carnivore ancestors.
Females give birth to 3 to 5 babies. However few live beyond the age of 5 year. They live an average of 30 years. Their colorings range from golden blond to brown and redish to dark brown and black. Sometime albinos well where they have red eyes. Their eyes are mostly brown but some will have yellow, blue or green. All have the signature mask and tail stripes however these too can be lighter colors if their base coat is lighter. Distant populations have also shown some distinct differences as well. Such as the most northern are stout and have thick fur while those in the southwest desert have short hair and larger ears. Those on the grasslands are taller and more lanky too. Those closer to the equator have darker colorings while those up north have lighter.
There are also some who have specialized in diffrent hunting techniques. Those near bodies of water tend to take advantage of fishing while those with abundant game will become hunters. Some will even follow other carnivores and take their kills by scaring them off.
